Essere Vs. Stare

Italian has two different kinds of “To Be” verbs: Essere & Stare

Essere: permanent aspects of people, animals, or things

-Identity, profession, origin, religious/political affiliation, to tell time, possession, nationality, physical aspects, essential qualities, location, condition/emotions, and personal observations

Stare: Is used to indicate precise locations, in idioms, and at times as an auxiliary verb

-Idiomatic sentences, continuous tense, precise location

Essere

I am a runner (identity) = (Io) sono un corridore

I am a teacher (profession) = sono una maestra

I am in the kitchen (location) = sono in cucina

I am Catholic (religion affiliation) = sono cattolico

She’s pretty (physical qualities) = Lei è bella

Those shoes are mine (possession) = Quelle scarpe sono miei

I am sad (emotion) = sono triste

It’s three o’clock (telling time) = sono le tre

I am American (nationality) = Sono americano

My parents are from Italy (origin) = Miei genitori sono d'Italia

Stare

I am running (continuous tense) = (Io) sto correndo

I am teaching (continuous tense) = sto insegnando

I am in my mother’s kitchen (precise location) = sto nella cucina della mamma

I am doing well (idiomatic expression) = “Sto bene”

Lei/lui/lei è

Noi siamo

Voi siete

Loro sono

Stare

Io sto

Lei/lui/lei sta
